I heart Campeche!
Campeche is a photographer's dream. Colorful buildings of mixed up colors that looks like a giant came through with a new box of crayons, the kind with 120 colors to try out. Windows and majestic doors adorned with intricate ironwork on every block in the historical section. Long sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico every evening with kilometers of walkway lined with a cement wall so everyone always has a view and seat too. There is an entire block or two dedicated to outdoor eating every day, with traffic cut off and tables set out on the street.
I would just love to live here, at least in the winter. It's pretty toasty in May. Our hotel room here was it's own experience. First of all there is an elevator to the first 2 floors, then you take a marble looking staircase to our floor, which only has 4 doors. None of them are marked. There is a monsterous big mirror across from our door, which makes the hallway look much bigger, and I can watch myself come out of my door every time. The first door is a good size, and a beautiful dark wood. Walk through it and step into an entryway with a big beautiful dark wood armoire on one side and the door to the bathroom on the other side. The bathroom has a huge wall to wall mirror over the big sink. The shower stall is so big that there is a rack on one end to hang the towels. The shower head is so big it's like standing in the rain. If you go straight there is a set of very tall double doors. Step through them and look down at a shiny marble floor, wonderfully cool in the heat of the day. Now look up and up, because the ceiling is probably 20 feet tall. With interesting inset lighting that makes it look like the wooden beams up there are open to the outside. This is a huge room with a big TV and a gigantic bed that almost looks small because of the big curtains hanging over the windows and doors to the mini balcony. The balcony gives a view of the narrow street and the top of a very old domed building that is on the next block. Best. Room. Ever. Well, it makes the top 3. The bed was bigger than a California King, and it was like sleeping on a cloud. And it was only $40 USD a night.
A little hand door knocker, very cool. And what a way to lock your door.
There was once a wall around Campeche, to fortify against pirates. I think it was 75 cents to walk along a part of it, which was incredibly cool. Except it was a hot day.
When you are ready to leave you ring the bell for someone to come and let you out. It was so much louder than I was expecting! This bell works well.
I don't know how to explain this. There is a block that has only a facade, with newly painted old walls. This one place was so interesting that afterwards I dragged my husband down the block to get more pictures. A broken roof with a tree growing out of it. I don't know why this deeply intrigues me.
This is what the inside of the place looked like, when I peeked in the window.
Day and night, there is so much to see.
